What’s happening?

Starting in the first quarter of next year, we’ll fit two of our trucks with hydrogen dual-fuel technology from Change Fuel Technologies. This system works by blending hydrogen with diesel, cutting emissions while maintaining the power required for heavy haulage. This six-month trial builds on the results seen from vehicles operating in New Zealand and extends it to our Super-Quad Road Trains. The trial is one of Australia’s first commercial-scale demonstrations of hydrogen as a low-emissions fuel source for heavy vehicles. Additional technical and engineering support for the trial will be performed by Xodus.

What this means for Newhaul

For us, this trial is about building confidence in hydrogen technology and proving it can work in real-world conditions without compromising reliability or efficiency. It’s a practical pathway to reduce emissions across our fleet, meet compliance under the Safeguard Mechanism, and keep delivering while moving toward a lower-carbon future.

This project isn’t just about trucks – it’s about regional innovation. Geraldton will play a key role in hosting one of Australia’s first hydrogen dual-fuel trials, putting the Mid West on the map for clean energy solutions.

Our commitment

"This trial is about demonstrating what’s possible. We’re committed to finding solutions that reduce emissions without compromising reliability or efficiency," says Craig Mitchell, Newhaul Managing Director & Founder. "Hydrogen dual-fuel technology is a step forward in the industry's ability to decarbonise heavy haulage, and this project gives us the opportunity to test it in real-world conditions."

What's next?

If the trial is successful, we’ll explore opportunities to roll out hydrogen technology across our fleet and work with partners to scale up supply from the Warradarge Green Hydrogen Project.

This project is supported by The Government of Western Australia's Carbon Innovation Grants Program administered by the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, and ARENA funding, and reflects our commitment to innovation and sustainability in heavy transport.
